Nutrition – Pine Valley Animal Clinic

As humans, we understand the importance of healthy eating and its link to preventing and/or managing a wide array of disease. From food allergies to weight issues, your pet will be healthier and more active with good nutrition, which may include a specific diet and supplements depending on its stage in life.

Here’s an example.  Maintaining your cat’s proper nutritional balance can be a challenge at any age when using dry food or free feeding methods. To maintain your cats weight pet owners will have more success when meal feeding a wet diet. Wet food is commonly perceived as decadent or fattening; however, the increased water content and reduced carbohydrates allows for your cat’s daily caloric intake to be decreased.

The most common time for a pet to become overweight is after they are spayed/neutered. Once their reproductive organs/hormones are removed the overall metabolism of the animal is decreased. If the calories exceed their daily requirements the pet is likely to gain weight abruptly. Obesity is linked to various diseases; osteoarthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hepatic lipidosis, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. Obese animals have a reduced life expectancy.

Preventing obesity is possible with necessary lifestyle changes for pets. For solutions on how to keep your pet in their best condition, contact us via phone or email.
